Former Longhorns soccer player Kylie Doniak is in critical condition after a hit and run accident early Friday morning.
Twenty two-year-old Doniak is improving but remains in a coma. Her family wrote on a blog that doctors took her off paralytic drugs Sunday, but she is heavily sedated.
According to police reports, Doniak was walking downtown when 22-year-old Nicholas Colunga ran a red light and drove into a crowd of people crossing the street, hitting Doniak along with two others while they attempted to cross the street.
Police say a motorcyclist chased down the driver, pulled him from his car and held him until officers arrived.
The accident left Doniak with a broken leg, broken ribs and a broken collar bone. Doctors are most concerned about brain swelling. They wrote, "Today was boring... but boring is good."
They also thanked everyone for their prayers.
Colunga is charged with DWI, intoxication assault and two counts of failure to stop and render aid.
University officials say Doniak is in the Intensive Care Unit at Brackenridge.
Women's athletics director Chris Plonsky released the following statement: "We and the family appreciate the outreach and outpouring of support for Kylie. She is a beloved student-athlete, not just here but in the entire collegiate soccer community. We appreciate everyone’s thoughts and prayers on her behalf.”
