UT's Youngquist tabbed National swimmer of the week
CollegeSwimming.com selected Texas sophomore Clay Youngquist as its National Division I Men’s Swimmer of the Week Tuesday after the All-American turned in impressive performances at last weekend’s Southwest Collegiate Plunge.
Youngquist (Battle Creek, Mich.) opened the two-day meet last Friday with an easy win in the 500-yard freestyle, where he was victorious in 4 minutes, 25.50 seconds and defeated his nearest competitor by over sixseconds. The two-time NCAA champion concluded the meet’s first day by leading off UT’s first-place 200 freestyle relay in 20.77 seconds.
Youngquist opened the meet’s second day with a dominant performance in his signature event, the 200 freestyle. Youngquist took the win in 1:36.20, the fastest time in college swimming this season, and topped his nearest competitor by over four seconds.
Youngquist helped the Horns to NCAA titles in the 400 and 800 freestyle relays as a freshman. He followed his productive spring with a solid summer, as he reached the semifinals of the 200m freestyle at the U.S. Olympic Trials. Youngquist was the youngest of the event’s 16 semifinalists and took 12th place.
The Longhorns take on Indiana and Michigan in their home opener on Friday, Oct. 26. The meet kicks off Friday at 3:30 p.m. CT.
