Diabetes doesn't keep this football player down
Last Tuesday, the Cedar Valley Jaguars eighth grade A Team completed a perfect 8-0 season.
The Round Rock ISD district champions were also a perfect 8-0 last year as seventh graders.
One Jaguar celebrated a different milestone Tuesday night, finishing his sixth season of football since being diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.
Theo Ross, 13, receives eight shots a day, and even administered one to himself at half time.
"He has got the disease under control so he really doesn't need to come out of the game for anything. He has a routine. He eats two hours before the game and gives himself a shot. He takes his blood sugar at half time. He manages," dad Ted Ross said.
Theo's received 13,000 shots since being diagnosed and must test his blood sugar level each time as well, which doesn't even seem to faze his teammates.
Theo often plays on both sides of the football as a linebacker and running back. When he's not playing football, he can be found on a basketball court, soccer field or running track. Nothing seems to slow this eighth-grader down.
Theo also takes the time to join his nurses as an aide to help other kids cope with diabetes.

"He is one of my student aides. I have him in there at a prime time so he can be in there with those kids. I do appreciate Theo so much. He is one of the greatest kids I've ever known," nurse Diane Hensz said.
"Kids look up to Theo. When he talks they listen. He's just taking all of this in stride and he's striving to be a leader," nurse Rheann Wingfield said.
Next year, Theo will be trying out for the McNeil football team and considering he's already scored seven touchdowns and intercepted the ball three times this season, the coaches look forward to him being a Maverick.
Theo said he doesn't like using the pump like most people with Type 1 diabetes because of his active lifestyle. He prefers taking the shots instead.
"Don't let diabetes control you. You have to control it," he said.
