Robert Waters may remind University of Texas fans of the most famous McNeil High School alum, AJ Abrams, but for Waters, his arm sleeve isn’t an accessory for style. He busted the bursa sac in his elbow earlier this season taking a charge.
He's a team player and insists he's not trying to be the new Abrams.
“I’m not AJ Abrams. I’m Robert Waters. Everybody has a name for themselves,” he said.
Waters is making a name for himself. He plays all positions for the 26-1 Mavericks.
“I’m a scorer, but I definitely like giving my teammates the ball, too,” Waters said. “I’m an all-around player. I just try to do whatever needs to be done to win the game.”
The McNeil Mavericks lost their first game of the season, but they haven’t lost since. As one of the senior captains, part of Waters' job is keeping the team level-headed.
He always advises his team to concentrate, stay focused and make sure they’re all doing the right things. Waters has helped McNeil become ranked as one of the top 5A teams in the state. The three-year starter says he has a hatred for losing. It’s a feeling they haven’t felt in two months.
Waters just surpassed the 1,000 point mark in his McNeil career. Tuesday, the Mavericks will try to keep their perfect district record alive against Round Rock.
