Those close to Tristan Lopez may say he’s shy, but talk to him about gymnastics and the 13-year-old opens up.

“I was doing a full spin, which is when you’re doing front drives, the same way except backwards, and you do a spin around the bar, but I missed my hand and smashed my hips into the bar and I had to compete the next day,” he said.

After only four years of the sport, Lopez has competed at the highest level in his age group. He earned a spot on the Men’s Future Stars National Team and qualified to compete for the Junior Olympic National Championship

“My favorite event is the high bar,” Lopez said. “It’s my best event, too.”

Lopez is currently competing in meets to prepare him for the state meet later this season. This weekend, he brought home three medals.

Learn more about him in the video above in this edition of Athlete of the Week.
