For Baker Mayfield, this year's state 7-on-7 tournament had a much different feel than last year's. In 2011, he wasn't even taking snaps in College Station.
This year, he's the undisputed starting quarterback.
“It's a huge difference," Mayfield said. "Last year, nobody really knew who I was.”
Mayfield and the Cavaliers made it to the quarterfinal round of the state 7-on-7 championships before falling to Manvel.
Next month, they'll begin the games that count and begin their drive for a sixth-straight state championship.
"We're up in 5A, and people doubt us all the time even though we beat 5A teams all the time,” Mayfield said. “We'll really have something to prove."
Mayfield's surprising junior year, one that saw him throw for 45 touchdowns, didn't go unnoticed.
He reports four scholarship offers, but he's hoping one more comes his way from Texas Christian University.
"It's kind of stressful, but I have to worry about what I'm doing right now,” Mayfield said. “I still have one more year of high school, and anything can happen with that, so I'm just worried about that right now."
Whatever his college future holds, he enters his senior season in high school in unfamiliar, but comfortable, territory.
