San Marcos, Texas – Four Bobcats scored in double figures, but the Texas State men's basketball wasn't able to upset UT Arlington tonight at Strahan Coliseum. The Mavericks remain the only unbeaten team left in conference play as they improved to 15-5, 7-0 SLC. The Bobcats drop to 8-12, 1-6 SLC.

Freshman guard Wesley Davis tied a school record eight steals to go along with his 14 points, two blocks and two assists. It was the most steals in a game by a Bobcat since 2002. Senior forward Brooks Ybarra led all players with 17 points, including five three-pointers. Junior forward Matt Staff finished with 14 points and seven rebounds, while senior guard Eddie Rios added 12 points. Texas State shot 39.7 percent from the floor and 79.2 percent from the free throw line.

It was an intense game from start to finish for Texas State. The Bobcats found themselves in early foul trouble five minutes into the second half. The calls seemed to favor the Mavericks as the Bobcats had three players foul out and two more with four fouls each.

Nonetheless, the Bobcats gave it all they got tonight as they had the victory within arm's reach. Texas State held a 79-75 advantage with 1:11 to go in the game after Staff made a pair of free throws. Reid Koenen was then called for a foul which sent UTA's Shaq White-Miller to the free throw line. White-Miller went 1-for-2 from the line to give the Bobcats the ball back. With a one-point lead, the Bobcats turned the ball over and committed a foul to send the Mavs back to the charity stripe. White-Miller made both free throws to go up by one point with 15 seconds to go in the game.

The Bobcats committed a costly turnover on the next possession, which again sent the Mavs to the free throw line. UTA hit both free throws and a last second desperation shot by Ybarra went left, as the Bobcats fell to the Mavericks, 82-79 tonight at Strahan.

Texas State led by as many as 11 points in the first half, but UT Arlington came back to end the period down 38-36. The Mavericks held the advantage on the boards, 25-27, but they also committed twice as many turnovers than the Bobcats. Texas State shot 76.9 percent from the free throw line.

UT Arlington was led in scoring by LaMarcus Reed who tallied 17 points. Bo Ingram and Shaq White-Miller chipped in 12 points apiece. The Mavericks shot 44.1 percent from the floor and 65.8 percent from the line.

Texas State will hit the road next week for a pair of away games. First stop on the Bobcats travel itinerary is Stephen F. Austin on Feb. 1. The Bobcats will then travel to Nicholls on Feb. 4 before returning home.
