San Antonio man charged in shooting death of UT student
AUSTIN -- A San Antonio man has been charged with capital murder in the death of a 22-year-old University of Texas student. William "Trey" Ehrhardt III was found fatally shot in his West Campus apartment on Oct. 31.
Authorities arrested and charged 21-year-old Jason Chacon on Friday. The move came a day after they raided his home and arrested his mother and brother on drug charges.
Authorities say the investigation is continuing but they believe the student's murder could have been drug-related. They did not say what led them to Chacon as a suspect.
Ehrhardt had called 911 minutes before the shooting to report an attempted break-in. But he hung up after telling an operator that the burglar had apparently left.
Officers were responding to his call when they found him fatally wounded. He was hospitalized and died a day later.
The homicide was the second since August in the West Campus neighborhood. UT junior Colton Pitonyak has been charged with the murder of acquaintance Jennifer Cave. Her body was found Aug. 18.
