Controversy surrounds new Austin Wal-Mart

By: Reagan Hackleman

The parking lot of Northcross Mall was virtually empty Wednesday.

That could all change if Wal-Mart gets its way. The retail giant wants to build a two-story, 219,000-square foot store at the mall.

"It is a David versus Goliath thing," Zinger owner Michael Ferweda.

Of course, Wal-Mart is the Goliath and Michael Ferweda thinks he is David.

Feweda owns Zinger, a store that carries a variety of products. For him, matching Wal-Mart's prices isn't what he's worried about.

"You are looking at congested streets trying to get in and out of that area. What will happen is our customers will say you know we are very loyal to you, but it's just to difficult to get in there," Ferweda said.

"We agree that this area needs to grow and want to see it grow," area resident Hope Morrison said.

Morrison doesn't want Wal-Mart to be part of that growth, even if it is an "upscale" version of the store.

"There is no big box and there is no Wal-Mart that would fit the character of this neighborhood," Morrison said.

In 1992 Sam Walton, the founder of Wal-Mart, published his autobiography, Made in America.

"If some community, for whatever reason, doesn't want us in there, we aren't interested in going in and creating a fuss," Walton wrote.

Tell that to the residents and business owners who are hunkering down for a fight.

"This is not a done deal," Morrison said.

"It's not just about price. It's not about product. This is about a social environment. That's what we are talking about," Ferweda said.
