Forensics, DNA expert testify against Pitonyak

By: News 8 Austin Staff

The second day of testimony in the murder trial of former University of Texas student Colton Pitonyak heard from DNA and forensics experts.

Pitonyak, 24, is accused of murdering 21-year-old Jennifer Cave in August 2005. The two had been on a dinner date around the time of the murder.

After Cave's body was found shot, stabbed and mutilated with the head and hands chopped off in Pitonyak's West campus apartment, he and a 22-year-old woman named Laura Hall were on their way to Mexico.

Hall is charged with hindering apprehension, a third-degree felony, and will be tried later.

Surveillance video presented Wednesday showed Pitonyak alone at a local hardware store near the University of Texas campus.

Jeffrey Breed, the owner of Breed and Company, testified that Pitonyak bought several items at his store, including a hacksaw, Kleenex, bathroom tissue, shop towels ammonia, carpet cleaner, Febreeze odor eliminator, latex gloves, dust masks and 55-gallon drum liners.

Breed said he showed Pitonyak the carpenter-type saws and asked Pitonyak what he needed one for.

"'Well, I'm frying a turkey today. I need to cut up a turkey,"' Breed said Pitonyak told him.

The prosecution says Pitonyak bought the items to cover up Cave's murder. Jurors also saw crime scene photos and diagrams of Pitonyak's apartment on Rio Grande Street.

It wasn't until after forensic detectives began their investigation that they realized Cave's body had not only been mutilated, but also shot. The gun, found in Pitonyak's 1997 Toyota Avalon, was also presented as evidence to jurors.

APD Det. Keith Walker testified that Cave had been shot in her right side. DNA evidence from Pitonyak and Hall was found on the gun.

It's Hall who the defense plans to point to as the reason Pitonyak mutilated Cave's body and fled to Mexico.
