Council approves code change for 'big box' retail
The next time a company wants to put up a 'big box' retail store in Austin, the city council will have the final say.
On Thursday night council members voted to change city code regarding local 'big box' retail.
The new ordinance requires any store more than 100,000 square feet to apply for what's called a conditional use zoning permit.
The permit would require the developer to notify neighborhood associations within one mile of the site and would require them to post a 4x6-foot sign on the property.
The new ordinance will also give the city council the final decision in whether or not a 'big box' store gets built.
This new ordinance will have no affect on the planned Wal-Mart set to go up at Austin's Northcross Mall.
Neighbors have been fighting those plans for weeks.
