Northcross Wal-Mart given final approval

By: Reagan Hackleman

It looks like it's a done deal. This week the city of Austin gave final approval for a controversial Wal-Mart Supercenter in North Austin.

The 198,000-square-foot store will be built at Northcross Mall, at Anderson Lane and Burnet Road.

Since November, a large group of neighbors known as Responsible Growth for Northcross have been saying the city was allowing the Wal-Mart to be built illegally because of concerns about traffic and construction plans.

"We think that the staff review of the site plan was very thorough. We know that everyone was looking for compliance with all the city codes and regulations and we are confident that this is an appropriately issued permit," Assistant City Manager
Laura Huffman said.

The city is expecting developer Lincoln Property Company to file for a demolition permit next.

Responsible Growth for Northcross says they still plan to sue the city to stop construction.
