Witnesses: Hall masterminded Cave dismemberment

By: News 8 Austin Staff

Day two of Laura Hall's trial began with testimony from a DNA specialist with the Austin Police Department.

Hall, 23, is charged with helping convicted murderer Colton Pitonyak dismember Jennifer Cave's body. She and Pitonyak then fled to Mexico in August 2005.

Hall faces two third-degree felony charges of hindering apprehension and tampering with evidence. Each carries a maximum 10-year prison sentence.

Pitonyak was sentenced in January to 55 years in prison. He is currently serving his sentence and will not be taking the stand.

On Wednesday, the DNA specialist identified blood found in Pitonyak's West Campus apartment, specifically blood in the bathroom, on a hacksaw, and on clothing. DNA evidence showed the blood belonging to Pitonyak and/or Cave.

"There's absolutely nothing, in terms of DNA, that links Laura Hall to the dismemberment of that body. She is linked to that to what people say or believe," defense attorney Joe James Sawyer said.

Following that testimony, three witnesses took the stand and said Hall told them she masterminded Cave's dismemberment.

Nora Sullivan, a friend of Pitonyak's, testified Hall admitted to encouraging Pitonyak to dismember Cave's body.

"She was clearly either making her story up or she committed perjury when she spoke to the jury in January. I mean, come on, you forgot that?" Sawyer said.

Hall's former cell mate Henrietta Langenbach testified that Hall told her Pitonyak was "flipping out" after the murder. Hall said she was the one with the "cool head" so she "took charge" of the operation, including writing a list of supplies for Pitonyak to buy at the hardware store and deciding to go to Mexico.

The owner of Breed and Company, a hardware store in Central Austin, testified at Pitonyak's trial after he bought a hacksaw, extra large garbage bags and latex gloves from the store in 2005.

When Langenbach said she asked Hall how she could do it, Hall responded, "How many grandmothers can tell their grandchildren they cut up a body?"

Hall's attorney tried to discredit Langenbach's testimony.

"If you believe an admitted thief and liar that was up in New Zealand helping people obtain passports with fake documents, then that's your witness," Sawyer said.

Testimony resumes Thursday morning.
