AISD reviews plans for failing schools

By: News 8 Austin Staff

Trustees in the Austin Independent School District reviewed the school improvement plans for the troubled Johnston and Reagan high schools and Pearce Middle School.

The campuses received an "academically unacceptable" rating by the Texas Education Agency and Johnston was threatened during the summer with being shut down.

Each school is being monitored by a campus intervention team. Administrators say the campuses are challenged by low-income, transient student populations that speak English as a second language.

Trustees approved an agreement with the city of Austin for the Youth of Promise Initiative and the All Stars Program to provide after-school intervention programs in the 78744 zip code area of Southeast Austin.

Childcare for teen parents will also be provided at Crockett, Johnston, Reagan, and Travis high schools.

The next regular meeting of the AISD Board of Trustees is at 7 p.m. on Nov. 12 at the Carruth Administration Center on West Sixth Street.
