'Art Bra' calendar raises money to fight breast cancer

By: Rachel Elsberry

A new fashion calendar called the Art Bra captures the spirit of women who wear breast cancer as a badge of courage.

Breast cancer survivors are featured in this first-of-its-kind calendar. It's the print version of an annual runway show.

The bras were designed by celebrities, artists and people like Adrienne Arter who wanted to honor a friend.

"I came across this because one of my dear friends, Shauna Martin was diagnosed with breast cancer," Arter said.

Phyllis Rose is a survivor of 23 years. She's one of two ladies featured as Ms. June in a bra called In Support of Original Sin. It has a Garden of Eden theme.

Ms. February, Barbara Formichelli, is a five-year survivor. She's featured in the calendar wearing a bra designed by Josh Austin called Have a Heart.

"It's a beautiful picture with a wonderful looking heart behind it," she said.

Formichelli purchased the bustier and wears it often under a blazer.

Mary Swanson is Ms. November. In the calendar she wears a bra donated by Debbie Harry of Blondie. It bears the singer's autograph. Appearing in the calendar has made the physical changes of cancer easier to face.

"When you get breast cancer and you survive it, sometimes you don't feel so good about yourself and by the way you look. So by doing this event it made all of us feel very beautiful and very special. It does make you feel special to be in print and to be in the first calendar as well," Swanson said.

Debbie Harry didn't just donate Ms. October's bra, she designed it.

"Well, my boyfriend's actually sound man for Blondie. So we called Debbie and said, 'Can you do art bras for us?" survivor Brenda Hutchison said.

Modeling the bra and appearing in the calendar has helped Hutchison keep her sense of humor as she battles breast cancer.

"I've had more fun with my life since I was diagnosed in these types of ways than I ever would have allowed myself to before," she said.

Adrienne Arter's friend Shauna Martin appears in the calendar in several places. She says breast cancer can wreck a woman's body image. Appearing in an art bra is a way of taking back what the disease takes. Chemo and hormones often cause women to gain weight.

"Then, you've lost your breasts, you've lost your hair and so having come through that and being actually brave enough to walk down a rundown in a bra is quite an achievement," Martin said.

Buy the calendar

The 2008 Art Bra calendar costs $15 and is sold locally at Betty Sport, the Breast Cancer Resource Center and North by Northwest.

There is a special holiday calendar signing party this Sunday at Betty Sport’s location in the Domain from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. Women who modeled the bras will sign a calendar for you. Proceeds go to the Breast Cancer Resource Center.
