Rally to save Pearce Middle School
They march to the beat of the same drum. Hoping that, through strength and unity, they can make a difference and prevent Pearce Middle School from closing its doors for good.
To keep the state from closing Pearce Middle School's doors, students have to get their grades up and meet performance standards set by the state of Texas.
Pearce is on its last legs.
It has repeatedly failed school performance standards. But the middle school isn't the only one that suffers from such a malady.
Rep. Dawnna Dukes (D)-Austin said it's not a problem that is exclusive to Pearce Middle School.
"It's a problem that is occurring systemically throughout East Austin schools … closure, failure on the TAKS exam," Dukes said.
So to keep Pearce Middle School open neighbors are coming up with a plan.
Through hearings, idea sessions, and marches and rallies like the one held on Saturday, they hope to create a stir and make a difference.
"It brings about hardships and burdens upon parents and students," Pastor A.W. Mays said.

If Pearce closes, students will have to go elsewhere for school and will be required to leave their community.
Some students are doing all they can and have a message for those who aren't.
"They need to step up and do their work, so they can keep their school open," student Tyrone Chavful said.
Parents have their own message.
"We ask that the head gets healthy and, it's a trickle-down effect, then the body will be better," parent Betty Johnson said.
Marchers feel Pearce should have the same opportunities other low performing schools have had to turn things around.
Organizers will present a finalized plan for Pearce to the AISD school board at its May 6 meeting.
