Small crowd rallies to save Pearce Middle School

By: News 8 Austin Staff

A crowd of about a dozen people rallied outside the Austin Independent School District headquarters Monday evening.

They gathered in hopes that their voices can help save Pearce Middle School.

The Texas Education Agency has threatened to close the school, because of low Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) test scores for the past three years.

Charlotte Dotson, the President of Pearce's parent-teacher association, said TAKS performance shouldn't be the only factor considered.

"We should just see if the scores didn't make it, give us a chance to make it next year," Dotson said. "We have a new Principal, we're trying to work with him, and we are. We're going to be successful."

AISD's board of trustees is scheduled to send an improvement plan for Pearce to the TEA later this month.
