Former Johnston High has new name

By: News 8 Austin Staff

The former Johnston High School got its new name Monday.

The school will be called Eastside Memorial High School at the Johnston Campus, and it will open its doors this Fall.

The Austin Independent School District board of trustees got public input on what the new name should be.

More than 600 people had submitted suggestions.

Among those in the running: Cesar Chavez, Eastside, Memorial and Veterans Memorial High School.

Some asked the board to keep the entire community in mind when selecting the name.

"With all due respect to the nomination of Eastside High School, that makes it sound like it belongs to the people from East Austin," veteran Dan Arellano said. "It's all ... it belongs to all of us ... to the people."

The new name follows the decision by the Texas Education Agency to close Johnston.

Students failed to meet minimum scores on standardized tests.
