Community welcomes Johnston's new name, fresh start
Students ushered in a new era in East Austin Thursday.
Johnston High School officially became Eastside Memorial High School at the Johnston Campus.
The Texas Education Agency closed the old Johnston High School because of poor test scores.
Now it will operate under a new name with a mostly new staff.
David Kernwein will continue as Interim Principal through July 2009.

"Everyone on this campus believes that we will be one of the most successful campuses in this city and in this part of Texas, and I'm very proud to be here," he said.
Eventually, two separate high schools will open on the Johnston Campus.
Eastside Memorial opens this Fall. A second high school is scheduled to open next fall.
