Breast cancer survivors show they still got it going on

By: Rachel Elsberry

It's more than just women in bras posing as the girl of the month in a 2009 calendar. The women are survivors and their cause is one they know all too well.

The 2009 Art Bra Calendar benefits the Breast Cancer Resource Center, which consists of a group of breast cancer survivors who work to provide support systems for breast cancer patients and their families.

"This is the second year that we've done the calendar," marketing director and calendar model, Barbara Formichelli, said. "It's tied to an event we call Graphic, that benefits the Breast Cancer Resource Center."

Formichelli said the group put out an ad for anybody feeling creatively inclined to create a bra and submit it to the center's runway show. From the Graphic runway show, the calendar is created.

All the women featured in the calendar are breast cancer survivors. Mo Gindler, Ms. October, said she found the whole project empowering.

"You've been through a lot, and it's very flattering," Gindler said. "I mean, how many places can you go, where they feature a middle-aged woman in a bra. It's lots of fun, and it just goes to show you that life goes on."

Gindler said the women at the center were all very positive and vibrant, making the experience that much better.

The calendars are for sale for $15 dollars at several locations, including:

- Betty Sport (both locations)
- Book Woman
- Pat Painter's Salon
- Pink Hair Salon
- Scarbrough's
- Sip's on 7th
- The Cutting Room

Calendar models will be signing calendars at J Black's Feel Good Lounge Friday at 7 p.m., and Book Woman Sunday from 1 – 2 p.m. For more information on those two events go to www.bcrc.org
