Just 2 nights left to walk the Trail of Lights

By: News 8 Austin Staff

There are just two nights left to catch a glimpse of a favorite Austin holiday tradition.

The Trail of Lights ends at 10 p.m. Tuesday.

It’s more than 1 mile in length and includes more than 40 lighted displays of everything from the manger scene to dancing cupcakes and gingerbread houses.

There is something for everyone, including a post office for children to write letters to Santa. There’s hot cocoa and lots of food, as well as a giant Yule log to help keep you warm.

Across Barton Springs Road, the Zilker Tree will remain lit until the New Year.

This year, the Trail is considered “green” thanks to Austin Energy, Victor Ovalle with Austin Parks and Recreation said.

“It is a green event,” he said. “Thanks to Austin Energy’s Green Choice program, all of the lights that are out here are powered by wind power. And, our Solid Waste services is also helping us recycle all of the trash out here.”

Ovalle said you can do your part by taking the shuttle to the Trail instead of driving.

The shuttle picks up at 14th and Trinity streets in Downtown Austin and delivers to the opening gate of the Trail. It picks up at the end of the trail.

The shuttle is $3 for people age 6 and older and $1 for children 5 and younger. If you bring one can of food, you will receive $1 off the shuttle price.

The Trail of Lights itself is free to the public. Though admission is free, on site parking is very limited for the Trail of Lights. It will cost you $15 a car to park at Zilker Park. Parking is available beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Gates open at 7 and close at 10 p.m.

If you have additional questions, check out the Trail of Lights page on the City of Austin Web site.
