At what age is it too late to get pets spayed?
Dr. Sue Losito has spayed or neutered hundreds of animals during her practice and highly recommends having it done as soon as it's time. And it's not just for dogs and cats.
Losito said, "In our practice, we like to see pets at six months of age for spaying or neutering. But you can spay or neuter a pet at any age. It's more risky when the pet is older. It's more risky when a female is pregnant or in season. But we can do it at any time. You can neuter rabbits, you can spay rabbits. There are certain facilities that specialize in exotics."
Many people think after a pet reaches a certain age it's unhealthy to have them spayed, but that's more like an old wives tale. It can be beneficial to pets at just about any age.

Losito said, "We spay dogs at any age, especially older dogs that have uterine infections. That's a very risky procedure. So if you have a pet that has had a few litters, you may want to do it to prevent infection down the line."
Pets who are spayed and neutered are less likely to run away or develop certain reproductive cancers. They are less likely to be aggressive or exhibit behaviors like spraying in the house. Not to mention they won't go into heat or have unwanted offspring.
Pet over population is a huge problem worldwide. Having your pets spayed or neutered is something you can do to help alleviate this global problem.
