Future of Pearce Middle School unknown
An Austin Independent School District community meeting on Thursday night considered the question, what if Pearce Middle School closes?
The Texas Education Agency could close the school for low academic performance on the TAKS tests.
The meeting on Thursday focused on what to do with the more than 500 students who attend Pearce, if the TEA does shut it down.
One plan suggested students be transferred to one of 12 other schools with sufficient capacity.
The other plan proposed that students be distributed to Dobie, Lamar and Webb middle schools, according to new boundaries.
AISD's own projections show that Webb Middle School may end up at 172 percent of capacity by the 2013-2014 school year.
Superintendent Pat Forgione said actual attendance will not work out that way most likely.
"We may assign you to a school, but under federal law, you will get a choice to go to other schools, and I will transport you there. So no one will have one option, they'll have multiple options," Forgione said.
Forgione also said Pearce Middle School's management team is reporting positive results in both academic performance and classroom discipline.
However, Pearce will not get TAKS test results until June.
