Still nothing found in search for missing 19-year-old

By: Antonio Castelan and Doug Shupe

The search continued Monday for 19-year-old Rachel Cooke, who has been missing since last Thursday.

"We're going to find her," Janet Cooke, her mother, said to a friend at the search. "We got all this love. We're going to find her and get her home."

No one has seen Rachel since she left around 10:30 a.m. Thursday to go out for a jog. Judging by the size of the search effort, hope has not diminished yet. Close to a hundred people showed up to help on Monday.

Her mother, grateful for all the support, remains confident. "I know her. She's strong. But she wants her momma, and her momma wants her."

For three days now, searchers have mounted horses and climbed into all-terrain vehicles, while others scour the woods on foot. The search area has changed from the neighborhood where Rachel was last seen to three surrounding parks.

"We're looking for any kind of indications of moving in the area -- hopefully any signs that Ms. Cooke's been in the area recently," search volunteer Derrick Wright said.

"I'm actually trying to find out what happened to that poor girl, and I really feel for her parents," Tam Thompson, another volunteer, said. "I can't imagine how it must be for them."

"It's not real. This is out of the movies. This is not real," said Sid Greg West, in shock and worried out of his mind. He was the last person to talk with Rachel, by cell phone from California, right before she left for her morning jog Thursday.

"I called her cell phone again looking for her, and her dad answered the phone. He just said that she was missing, and I couldn't believe it."

Immediately, West booked a one-way plane ticket to Texas.

"I'm just worried about her and getting her back. Whatever happens in San Diego happens in San Diego. I just want to be able to get my baby back," he said.

Since arriving on Sunday, West has been comforting Rachel's family, who live near Georgetown. He's been looking at the most recent photos he took with his girlfriend, taken while partying on Sixth Street New Year's Eve.

"There's a lot of people who love her. And we just want to get her back because our lives won't be the same without her," West said.

Despite all his concerns, West is doing the best he can to hold himself together. He's confident Rachel is doing the same.

"She's the most beautiful person I've ever known in my life. And I know that she's strong. She's so strong, and she's going to survive," he said. "And baby, I promise I'm coming out there to get you. No matter what it takes, I'm there."

Sheriff's deputies have covered at least at least 75 square miles since the search began. Nothing has surfaced.

"It's very frustrating, but it makes you determined. Every day that passes by, you become more determined that we're going to get to the bottom of this," said Sgt. Mike Lummus.

Both the Williamson County Sheriff's Office and Rachel's family ask anyone with information to contact them by calling (512) 943-1300.

"Let her be with us. Let her come home," said her mother.

Rachel Cooke was last seen at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday wearing a green sports top, gray sweat pants, Adidas shoes and carrying a yellow Walkman.
