Family mourns as hearings begin in Espinosa case
Sunday would have been Christy Espinosa's 22nd birthday, but her family celebrated the day with only pictures and memories.
Christy's body was found burning in an East Travis County field in February.
Her family says Christy was a loving and trusting person, and she just trusted the wrong people that night.
"It's like a one-in-a-million chance that it would happen to your kid, and it happened,” Christy’s father, Antonio Espinosa, said. “We're not going to give up hope, and as far as you can see the crowd, family and friends that showed up here, that says a lot about who she was and how many people love her and care about her."
Two people were charged in her murder, Martha Medina-Hernandez and her husband Kenneth Hernandez.
Police said the pair targeted Christy to steal her identity.
A pretrial hearing for both is scheduled Monday at the Travis County Courthouse.
