AISD to hold public meeting on Pearce repurposing plan
The Austin Independent School District's superintendent will present a repurposing proposal for Pearce Middle School on Monday.
About a week ago, AISD released a statement regarding the 40-page document, calling it a "framework for strong academic improvement."
The plan includes certain nonnegotiables, including a daily advisory period for students, interdisciplinary instruction, integrated technology and greater professional development for teachers.
The repurposing plan also calls for each grade level to have a focus on becoming a family environment with more personal attention to each individual student.
In addition, students are encouraged to come up with a nine-year college, career and life plan, in order to decrease the dropout rate in high school.
More support for English language learners also is included in the plan.
If the plan is approved at the Monday meeting, it will move to the desk of the Texas education commissioner. If he approves it, Pearce Middle School could reopen as soon as Aug. 24, the first day of school for AISD.
Following the presentation, a public hearing will take place and the AISD Board of Trustees is expected to take action.
