Austin City Council asked City Manager Marc Ott Thursday to find a way to let the city begin inspecting construction sites around town.

This move comes after three construction workers were killed in June after falling from a high-rise in the campus area.

Ultimately, council said it would like to be able to add construction safety inspectors to the city staff.

"The ultimate goal of this is to make construction work less dangerous as it is so that next summer we don't have seven construction workers dying on the job," Council Member Bill Spelman said.

According to a report released by the Workers Defense Project, Texas is the deadliest state when it comes to construction deaths.

The city manager is expected to present his findings to council next month.
