Zilker tree lights up the holiday season
An annual holiday tradition comes back to light this weekend when the City of Austin flips the switch on the Zilker Tree.
The Zilker Tree stands at 155 feet tall and has more than 3,300 twinkling lights. It was first put up on the Moonlight Tower back in 1965.
The lighting ceremony will be held this Sunday at 6 p.m.
The Zilker Tree Holiday Festival kicks off on Dec. 13. The event will take place on the park's great lawn near the tree and will feature holiday displays, music and food.
The tree will stay lit nightly through New Year's Eve, and the festival will run through Dec. 21. Parking will be available at Zilker Park.
The event is taking the place of the annual Trail of Lights.
