Activists demonstrate against West Texas private prison

NEW BRAUNFELS -- Civil rights activists say they're taking their attack on conditions in a privately run West Texas prison to the prison operator's New Braunfels offices.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Texas and other groups are demonstrating around midday Thursday outside the regional offices of the GEO Group.

They're trying to draw attention to what they say are poor conditions in the GEO-operated Reeves County Detention Center near Pecos.

Prison detainees rioted last December and January, complaining of inadequate health care after the death of 32-year-old Jesus Manuel Galindo a year ago. An attorney for the dead inmate's family contends prison officials and medical care providers improperly treated the epileptic inmate and his death while in solitary confinement set off the first of two riots at the prison.
