Candidates gain new ground in second GOP debate

By: News 8 Austin Staff

Gov. Rick Perry faced Texas Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison and GOP activist Debra Medina in a televised debate Friday night. It was the last scheduled debate before the March 2 primary elections.

Gov. Rick Perry began the second debate among the three Republican gubernatorial candidates by defending his failed plan for a massive tollway system through Texas.

Perry said he didn't "think it was a mistake at all to have a vision to move people and produce through the state expeditiously."

Hutchison reiterated her support for restrictions on abortions but acknowledged she opposes overturning Roe v. Wade. Hutchison said she is "very concerned about what would happen" if the landmark Supreme Court ruling was overturned.

Medina expressed her views on gay marriage, saying marriage should be between a man, woman, and God. She said illegal immigration had a devastating economic impact on Texas. She also stressed the value of private property and Texas' need to protect private property.

In an informal online poll in a chat during the debate, the audience overwhelming chose Medina as the strongest Republican candidate for Texas governor. Perry came in second, while Hutchison came in last with a small percentage of the vote.
