Authorities: Texas man dies when run over by train

LUBBOCK, Texas — Authorities said an elderly Lubbock man died the same day he was reported missing when he was run over by a train while lying on the tracks.

Lubbock police Capt. Greg Stevens told the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal the train likely didn't have time to stop before hitting 79-year-old Leon Trotter on Friday evening. He had been reported missing that morning.

The Texas Department of Public Safety said the operator of the BNSF train reported seeing Trotter on the tracks. DPS said the accident happened along U.S. Highway 84 near Anton, about 350 miles northwest of Dallas.

Authorities said the accident happened hours after Trotter's abandoned truck was found about 10 miles away.
