Families of Mel Cotton and Gobert testify
During the punishment phase of Milton Gobert's capital murder trial Friday, jurors heard testimony from Gobert's family as well as from the family of the woman he murdered.
Gobert was found guilty Tuesday of capital murder for stabbing 30-year-old Mel Cotton to death in 2003.
Mel Cotton's mother, Liberty Bell Cotton, told the jury of the profound loss her family has suffered since her daughter's death.
"When she told me I just went numb, screamed. Yes, my daughter there. I rode all the way back to Austin in my pajamas," Cotton Said.
Gobert's sister, MIchelle Sams, testified for the defense. She said she witnessed him her brother get hit by a car when he was 5-years-old and that since the accident his demeanor changed.
"I was there standing at the driveway when the car continued to drag his big wheel down the street while he laid there in a pool of blood," said Sams.
The defense is hoping to show that Gobert's history of violence is related to the accident he experienced as a boy, and that it's evidence of a mitigating circumstance that would warrant sentencing him to life in prison instead of the death sentence.
Earlier in the day, the prosecution submitted evidence that Gobert had used plastic to tamper with the functionality of the leg brace he is forced to where as a security measure. The brace is designed to keep him from running.
More witnesses from the defense and closing arguments are expected early next week.
