News that a south Austin landmark could face demolition has brought volunteers out of the woodwork.

The City of Austin gave the Cathedral of Junk until the end of the month to clean itself up, after a visitor complained about code violations. Demolition and reconstruction of the junk began Wednesday.

With the help of the community, the owner hopes to present a re-crafted, in-compliance cathedral to the city for approval.

Volunteers are invited to come out Sunday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. for reconstruction and crafts. The Cathedral of Junk is located at 4422 Lareina Dr.

Also Sunday, the community will come together for Junkfest at the Spider House Cafe in central Austin from 3-9 p.m. to benefit the Cathedral of Junk.
