Volunteers headed out to an Austin landmark Sunday, in the 18th and final day of intensive remodeling and cleanup at the Cathedral of Junk.

The City of Austin gave the owner until the end of the month to bring the attraction up to code, after someone complained about code violations.

Vince Hannemann hopes the city will approve a re-crafted version of the Cathedral, and give him an auxiliary structure permit, which requires the removal of hundreds of pounds of metal and a lot of readjustments.

"I've heard from Potts, the head code enforcement guy that he doesn't think an engineer will certify this and that there's just no way that we're going to be able to meet their requirements, but I beg to differ," he said. "I think the volunteers are all out here to make sure that will happen. We are going to get an engineer and we are going to prove that the cathedral is safe."

Hannemann said he has received help from a steady stream of volunteers.

"We've been doing a little bit of touching up and kind of healing the wounds of the scars of what’s been taken down," he said. "It's huge; I mean, we've taken tons of stuff over to the scales to be sold as scrap metal."

In the process, Hannemann said they found a few surprises.

"There's over 800 bikes in here, it was probably closer to 1,000, the sign says 800. Nobody really believed me, until we started dismantling how many bikes there actually were in there," he said.

He said he’s ready for a company to come and survey the property, so that an architect can draft a drawing for the permit application.

The city gave him until March 31 to submit the paperwork, but Hannemann has asked for an extension. He said he has been told he will likely get it.

A benefit for the Cathedral takes place Sunday at the Spider House Cafe in Central Austin until 9 p.m.
