A heated argument between local opponents and supporters of the health care bill ignited Sunday.

Protesters held signs, bullhorns, and yelled during an event thanking U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett for voting yes to health care reform.

Some said they’re worried about the government’s role in health care. They also said they fear the expense of the plan.

“I have no idea how that’s going to affect me, but I know that my premiums will go up and my care possibly will go down,” protestor Jamie Short said.

“I think most people here think health care is a good thing. The system does need help, but this is the wrong way to approach it,” self-employed protester Steve Schultz said.

But Doggett said there’s no reason for the concern.

"I understand that many of these folks are out there concerned. They think something will be taken from them and given to someone else. That's not going to happen under this plan," he said.

The event was held at the AFL-CIO Union Hall. The labor group feels the health care bill is especially important in ensuring retirement benefits.

“It is time that we give dignity to every citizen in this country by way of quality healthcare,” AFL-CIO president Becky Moeller said.

President Obama signed the health care bill into law last Tuesday. Parts of the bill go into effect immediately. That includes tax breaks for small businesses offering coverage to employees.

The bill will continue rolling out in phases through 2014.
