The Cathedral of Junk loses some of its junk
The 22-year-old Cathedral of Junk in South Austin will have to release some of its junk.

Austin code compliance officers said the structure, which is made out of scrap medal, old electronics, unwanted furniture and gadgets, was in violation of numerous codes.

Vince Hannemann, owner of Cathedral of Junk, said code enforcement officials have given him an extension. His structure must be up to code by April 9.

If he doesn’t comply with officials, the attraction could be gone forever.

The owner is also looking to get a couple of engineers involved to help reconstruct and solve the easement problem.

Hanneman said he and volunteers have done a lot of dismantling, and have taken out four tons of materials. Those materials are going to be recycled or used later down the road to reconstruct some of the cathedral.

Hanneman also said some city hall officials “have been more helpful and acted more in an advisory capacity than code enforcement has.” Officials have told him they don't want more of the cathedral torn down than necessary for safety, he added.

With that in mind, Hanneman plans on keeping his creation open without electricity and without access to the third floor. Visitors can now only visit the middle level, which is about 10 feet high.
