More permit-related problems have arisen for the Cathedral of Junk.
After the city received complaints about the structure, officials told creator Vince Hannemann he had until the end of March to bring it up to code.
Hannemann got an extension, which ended Friday.
Now, city officials have told Hannemann the cathedral is operating improperly as an entertainment venue. He has been denied a building permit to continue his planned upgrade.
"It would be nice to know what are the rules that I can work within. Is there anything that I can do here, or are they just setting these traps for me," Hannemann said.
City authorities said they haven't even determined what the use of the Cathedral of Junk is. They plan to meet with Hannemann sometime next week. Next door neighbors have already decided that the Cathedral has to go.
"It really doesn't belong in a residentially-zoned neighborhood. The traffic has just increased enormously," neighbor Roxanne King said.
Hannemann plans to consult with a group of cathedral volunteers about what to do. He may hire an attorney to help him work through the maze of city approvals.
