Education nonprofit grades Austin-area public schools

By: News 8 Austin Staff

Education nonprofit organization Children at Risk released a report ranking Austin-area public schools.

What the report shows, most conclusively, according to the nonprofit, is that small-population schools performed better, even when taking into to account the challenges faced by large-population schools.

"What is very clear to us, and this is all over the state, is that for urban populations, high-poverty populations, the large, comprehensive high school is not working in the State of Texas, nor is it working anywhere in the nation," Children at Risk President Bob Sanborn said.

The report evaluates public high schools, middle schools and elementary schools in the seven counties that make up the greater Austin area.

The top 10 public high schools include Westwood High School in Round Rock, Westlake High School in Eanes and Wimberley High School in Wimberley.

Austin Independent School District's Lanier, Travis and Reagan high schools ranked last.

The report also includes the top 10 most improved schools in the area, including Katherine Anne Porter, Del Valle and Marble Falls high schools.

The report evaluates the schools based on graduation rates, participation of advanced coursework and performance on college entrance exams.
