Reagan now faces possible closure under the state accountability law.

Some stand behind the school and believe the community can overcome its challenges.

"You never walk away from kids or a school just because they’re facing challenges. That's the time you get in there and help and work until you get over the hump with those kids," St. John Neighborhood Association spokesperson Allen Weeks said.

The TEA announced the closure of Pearce, a neighboring middle school, last July. It reopened in the fall.
