Pearce Middle School started this school year fresh. After several years of unacceptable ratings for state and national standards, the school has a new principal and new plans for improvement.

The clean slate that was expected to give Pearce and the new principal another five years to improve test scores was reneged by the Board of Education. Once again, the school is on the chopping block this year.

"They expect her to turn around that school in one year and that is utterly ridiculous thinking,” AISD Board Member Cheryl Bradley said.

Reagan High School is also on its last straw. If the school doesn’t deliver better scores, students could be transferred and bussed to different schools next year.

Jacqueline Chatham is the PTA President for Reagan High School.

"The top priority is the child's education. So if they're going to go to another school that's going to treat them right and actually educate them, then that's better," Chatham said.

Superintendent Meria Carstarphen has been working to stay ahead of the curve and make plans early to improve schools.

"We need to do a systemic approach. We cannot continue to say that the problem is at the high school or middle school level. We have to ensure that we have a rigorous program that is pre-K through 12," Bradley said.

The Austin Independent School District School Board is expected to discuss transfer recommendations for the students Monday.

Pearce Middle School has failed to meet academic standards for five years. Reagan High School has failed for four.
