Capital Metro staff, board and community members appeared before the Sunset Advisory Commission Tuesday.
The Sunset Advisory Commission was created in 1977 to examine the effectiveness of government agencies. The commission conducted a review of Cap Metro's practices and
reported the results in late April.
The report found that Capital Metro took said the agency's lack of adequate financial planning and high cost of services put Capital Metro in long-term financial risk.
Tuesday's hearing focused on four key issues, including Cap Metro's financial instability, excessive costs for in-house transit service, its rail safety program and the board's past problems with public communication.
"We embrace the report, we agree with the findings, and we agree with the recommendations, and we will not wait to begin making changes," Cap Metro board Chairman and Austin Mayor Pro Tem Mike Martinez said.
The commission seemed satisfied that Cap Metro is working to fix its problems.
"It's good to come in and see the progress of the system working so well. Of course, there's a lot of work left, but my observation is the Sunset process is really thriving and doing well with this project," Sen. John Whitmire, D-Houston, said.
The Sunset Advisory Commission expects to release more thorough recommendations July 6.
Members of Cap Metro's board said they've already enacted some of the solutions stated in the initial report.
