Texas Supreme Court dismisses ballot challenge

The Texas Supreme Court has removed the last hurdle for the Green Party to be on the Nov. 2 statewide ballot, dismissing a challenge brought on by state Democrats.
They had already agreed to drop their efforts, making Friday's ruling little more than a formality.
The state Democratic Party has alleged a Green Party petition drive was a plot hatched and supported by Republicans to pull liberal votes away from Democratic gubernatorial nominee Bill White.
"When all the facts are established and the truth is known, the courts will see that this is a case where the Republicans had an obvious political interest and funneled secret funds into an illegal corporate effort to gain political advantage," the Texas Democratic Party stated in a press release Wednesday.
Last week, the court ruled the Green Party could be on the ballot while the case was pending.
Democrats said the Green Party improperly accepted money from a group backed by Republicans.
"I've been disappointed to watch the Democratic Party leadership use the courts as a political and media arena. The Green Party is clearly within the limits of the law, and yet we and our supporters are being persecuted by an ongoing witch hunt,” co-chair of the Green Party of Texas Christine Morhsedi said.
Green Party officials said they’ve never supported the re-election of Gov. Perry and reject “the current scheme of corporate sponsorship of elections.”
Democrats said they will continue separate efforts in a lower court to sue for civil penalties.
“The Texas Democratic Party filed this lawsuit because Texans deserve to know who secretly spent over half a million dollars to influence the 2010 elections,” Texas Democratic Party Chair Boyd Richie said in a press release Wednesday.
Perry campaign spokesman Mark Miner said this is nothing more than a diversion by the Democrats to keep the focus off a failing candidate for governor Bill White.
