Young people in Austin served up home-grown food at a community lunch in East Travis County Friday.

Urban Roots interns planted vegetable seeds in the spring and celebrated the summer harvest by cooking up their crops and dishing them out at the non-profit's farm.

Seeing the process through from start to finish gave the young chefs something to think about while they prepared the meal.

"I was thinking, 'Oh, HEB, I don't know where these vegetables have come from,’ But I have actually put the seed into the ground. I know where this vegetable has been, I know how it's been fed, how it's been watered,” Urban Roots intern Madison Matthews said.

Starting Monday, Snap Kitchen in Central Austin is giving away free menu items for customers who donate tools off Urban Roots wish list. Click here for the list.
