A mother and son died in a collision early Friday morning in Caldwell County.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Rachel Anzaldua of Bastrop was driving east on FM 20 near County Road 166 just after midnight Friday. Authorities say she lost control of her car and hit a pickup heading west.

Anzaldua and her 9-year-old son both died in the wreck.

The driver of the pickup sustained minor injuries.

Anzaldua was the Caldwell County Deputy Treasurer. The Caldwell County financial offices were closed Friday as staffers mourned the loss.

DPS officials say the roads were wet, but they are not confirming if that contributed to the accident.
