A few years ago, officials with the city decided to transform old warehouses in the
Second Street District of Downtown Austin into condos and retail shops. Ten years later, the results of the project might surprise you.
The city-supported shopping area already has stores ranging from women's clothing to yogurt self-service to a sushi restaurant.
"It's diverse," Austin Business Journal’s Editor Colin Pope said. "These are high-end retailers and everybody was really skeptical of whether or not this retail hot spot would actually be a hot spot."
Although many people were originally unsure of the project, the shopping area has proved to be huge success. It currently has 86 percent of the space leased and has less than a 4 percent turnover.
The successful trend doesn’t seem to be ending anytime soon. Even more businesses are planning to occupy the space, providing different attractions such as an artistic theater lounge and eventually a men's clothing store.
Pope discusses more of the details with News 8 Austin's Paul Brown during the Business Connection.
