Upon the 44th president's arrival in Austin Monday, Gov. Rick Perry handed a letter to an adviser of President Barack Obama, requesting 1,000 troops be sent to the Texas-Mexico border.

Obama arrived at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport just before noon Monday, in his third stop in Texas and first stop in Austin since elected president. Obama plans to attend Democratic fundraisers in Austin and Dallas, as well as deliver a speech at the University of Texas at Austin about higher education.

Gov. Perry had requested to meet with the president during Obama's visit to discuss increasing border security enforcement. After the president stepped off Air Force One, Perry was the first to greet him. Perry then handed the letter to an Obama adviser.

"I respectfully but urgently request that the federal government quickly deploy 1,000 troops to the Texas-Mexico border, as well as additional law enforcement tolls and technology," Perry said in the letter.

The letter calls the president’s deployment of 286 National Guard troops to the border insufficient.

"The need for border security along the Rio Grande should no longer be underestimated by the federal government, Mr. President. An unsecured border is a threat to our national security and to the safety and security of all our citizens," the letter states.

In a related matter, the U.S. Senate has approved a bill to allocate about $600 million toward beefing up the border, which would include about 1,500 enforcement guards and would raise border security spending by 10 percent over border security levels. The House has yet to pass the measure.
