Ninety-three years ago to the day, the Austin Fire Department lost one of their own.

Firefighter James T. Glass died in 1917, from injuries he received in the line of duty. Austin firefighters gathered to honor him Tuesday.

Glass broke his spine while fighting a fire on Congress Avenue in 1916 and remained in the hospital until his death. Researchers recently found that Glass was buried in an unmarked grave.

Tuesday, firefighters unveiled a headstone, with full AFD honors, dedicated to Glass.

"James Glass deserves to have his final resting place marked and he made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty and we need to recognize that," Austin Fire Chief Rhoda Mae Kerr said.

Earlier this year, the Austin Fire Department honored Glass by renumbering one of its fire engines.

The engine was designated with Glass’s retired badge number 13.
