For the past year, Austin resident Tahirih Fry has done her fair share of sitting and waiting at the bus stop.

On this Sunday morning, Fry waited for Capital Metro number three, headed northbound.

"I have to get up an hour and a half earlier to get a bus to get to work in time, like today I'm pushing it," Fry said.

Fry said during the week there are plenty of buses on the roads, minimizing the time she has to wait. However, she said weekends are a different story.

"It takes longer to get to work, and I have to wait longer for buses and it's just ridiculous," she said. "If they can make it more on the weekdays [than] they do on the weekends, then people can get to work on time and not have to wake up so early to get the bus."

Cap Metro officials said making the transit system more convenient for riders like Fry is part of their 10-year plan.

On Sunday, Cap Metro made its first change under their 2020 plan by adjusting its fall service schedule.

"For the last year and a half, we looked at routes, analyzed patterns and looked at ways to improve the system and make it more efficient and better for the customer," Cap Metro spokeswoman Misty Whited said.

Under the changes, certain routes will see increased frequency, connectivity and schedule adjustments. Other routes have been eliminated altogether.

"These changes are taking effect now, but we started talking about them last May, so it's something that's been coming for a while, and we're hoping that people are aware of the changes," Whited said.

One addition includes a rail connector route for MetroRail riders who use the Kramer Station. Cap Metro officials said the route will allow passengers to connect to many of the major businesses in the area, as well as the Domain, on weekdays.

This new change is one of the first to take effect as part of the 10-year plan, with other options under consideration for the MetroRail system.

"In the future we are looking at possible midday trips as well as weekend service, just weighing the factors, and what we can do with the resources that we have and hopefully make a decision soon," Whited said.

The MetroRail system was launched back in March. Whited said in the beginning ridership was at about 900 average daily riders, but has since dropped to about 830.

"We are hoping to get the word out about the service, because still some people don't even know that it's here and it's available," she said.

Now under the leadership of new Cap Metro President and CEO Linda Watson, Whited said Cap Metro is moving in the right direction.

"She's already starting to understand how we work. She's looking to talk with more employees and people out in the community and just get a better understanding of Cap Metro," she said. "She's already looking to make improvements, and we're ready as well."
