Predator drones begin monitoring US-Mexico border

By: News 8 Austin Staff

Unmanned Predator drones started monitoring the U.S.-Mexico border Wednesday.

The surveillance aircraft carry equipment, including day and night vision cameras used to detect drug and human smugglers.

Earlier this month, President Barack Obama signed a bill funding more boots on the ground along the border.

Gov. Rick Perry said it's still not enough. He said he’s not sure if the drones will work and he isn't getting any information from the government.

"If the drones are flying out the Gulf of Mexico, they're not helping a darn thing," he said. "If they're flying up and down the border with Mexico and real time information flying down to law enforcement, then sure, but I have no idea where they're flying and if they're sending information down."

Perry also questioned why Predator drones weren't sent to monitor the border sooner.
