The City of Waco will spend millions on a new hike and bike trail running through Brazos Park East.
The Texas Department of Transportation awarded the city with a $2.1 million grant to help pay for the project.
Park planners said the upgrade will make the park more accessible, especially for pedestrians.
"Along the riverbank, we're going to incorporate some seating and possibly take some views into consideration,” Park Planner Tom Balk said. “There's going to be lighting for nighttime use."
A few other renovations are on the list, but now park officials will have to come up with some additional blueprints.
"With that project we have two restroom buildings, a large pavilion that will be used for concerts and similar events,” Senior Park Planner Sharon Fuller said.
With more plans for the future, more money from the city is needed. The Downtown Tax Increment Finance Board approved a 20 percent match of more than $520,000, which is now up for approval by city council.
"It's a great opportunity for the whole area to be redeveloped with these two projects," Fuller said.
Current renovations at Brazos Park East are scheduled for completion in Spring 2011. The trail could be completed by late 2012 or early 2013.
